THE HANGMAN, THEY’D COME to call him, a darling little nom de plum that he had begun to adore. At first he had taken a curious sort of offense, as if astonished that they dare reprimand him for his practices with such a nickname, such a vile little nomenclature, but he had begun to realize its beauty, its quirky little truth. It was neither a criticism for his belligerent show nor his infatuation with asphyxiation but a praise of his own malign genius—the crowd ate up his imagination, every spurting drop from the hot throat of this striped tent.
This is Mallic, the ringleader of a fancy little horror circus.
